Prenatal Massage in Ottawa:
Back Pain, Safe Positioning and What to Expect

Prenatal massage with side-lying positioning and supportive pillows in Nepean Ottawa

Pregnancy can bring many physical changes. As your body adapts, it is common to experience lower back pain, hip tightness, leg heaviness, neck and shoulder tension, or difficulty sleeping comfortably.

Prenatal massage is a gentle, supportive treatment option that may help reduce muscle tension, improve comfort, and support relaxation during pregnancy. At Woodroffe Health Centre in Ottawa, prenatal massage is provided by Registered Massage Therapists who adjust each treatment based on your pregnancy stage, comfort level, and health history.

This guide explains when prenatal massage may be helpful, how we position clients safely, and when it is best to speak with your doctor or midwife before booking.

Why Pregnant Clients Book Prenatal Massage

As pregnancy progresses, changes in posture, weight distribution, and joint pressure can place extra strain on the back, hips, legs, neck, and shoulders.

Many clients book prenatal massage for:

Symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people feel more discomfort in the second trimester, while others notice more strain in the third trimester as the baby grows and the body's centre of gravity changes.

Prenatal massage is not a replacement for medical care. It is a supportive treatment for muscle and soft-tissue discomfort during pregnancy.

What Research Suggests

Research on massage therapy during pregnancy suggests that it may help some people reduce back pain, muscle tension, stress, and sleep discomfort. However, results can vary. The safest approach is to adapt the treatment to the individual — including pregnancy stage, comfort level, medical history, and any advice from a doctor or midwife.

At Woodroffe Health Centre, our approach is conservative and comfort-focused. We avoid unnecessary pressure, communicate clearly during the session, and adjust the treatment whenever needed.

Safe Positioning During Prenatal Massage

Positioning is one of the most important parts of prenatal massage. At our clinic, pregnant clients are usually positioned side-lying, especially after the first trimester. Pillows are used to support the head, belly, hips, knees, and arms. This helps reduce pressure on the abdomen and keeps the body more comfortable during treatment.

1
Side-lying support You will usually lie on your side with pillows placed for support. This position helps reduce strain on the lower back, hips, belly, knees, and shoulders.
2
No direct abdominal pressure We do not apply direct massage pressure to the abdomen. Treatment usually focuses on areas such as the back, hips, gluteal muscles, legs, shoulders, neck, arms, and feet, depending on your comfort and needs.
3
Gentle and adjusted pressure Prenatal massage does not need to be deep to be helpful. Pressure is adjusted carefully, especially around the lower back, hips, legs, and sensitive areas.
4
You can ask for changes anytime You are always in control of the session. If a position, pressure level, or area of treatment feels uncomfortable, we can adjust immediately.

When to Speak With Your Doctor or Midwife First

Prenatal massage may be suitable for many low-risk pregnancies, but there are situations where medical guidance is important before booking.

Please speak with your doctor or midwife first if you have or suspect any of the following:

If you are unsure, it is always reasonable to ask your healthcare provider before booking.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your appointment begins with a short health intake. Your Registered Massage Therapist may ask how many weeks pregnant you are, what areas feel uncomfortable, whether your pregnancy is low-risk or high-risk, whether you have any medical restrictions, what pressure level you prefer, and whether certain positions feel uncomfortable.

Your treatment is then adjusted based on your answers. You do not need to know exactly what type of massage you need. You can simply tell us where you feel tension or discomfort, and your therapist will guide the session from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?

Prenatal massage may be suitable for many low-risk pregnancies, but some clients prefer to wait until the second trimester. If you are in the first trimester and have bleeding, cramping, severe nausea, a high-risk pregnancy, or a history of complications, please check with your doctor or midwife first.

How will I be positioned during prenatal massage?

Most prenatal clients are positioned side-lying with pillows for support. This helps reduce pressure on the abdomen and keeps the lower back, hips, knees, shoulders, and neck more comfortable.

Do you massage the belly?

No. We do not apply direct massage pressure to the abdomen. The treatment usually focuses on areas such as the back, hips, gluteal muscles, legs, shoulders, neck, arms, and feet.

Can prenatal massage help with sciatic-type discomfort?

Prenatal massage may help reduce muscle tension around the lower back, hips, and gluteal area, which may improve comfort for some clients with sciatic-type symptoms. If you have severe pain, numbness, weakness, or symptoms that are worsening, please speak with your healthcare provider.

When should I ask my doctor before booking?

You should ask your doctor or midwife first if you have a high-risk pregnancy, preeclampsia, blood clot concerns, placental complications, unexplained bleeding, severe swelling, severe pain, or any condition being closely monitored during pregnancy.

Is prenatal massage covered by insurance in Ontario?

If your extended health plan includes massage therapy, prenatal massage may be covered when provided by a Registered Massage Therapist. We provide insurance receipts after every session, and direct billing may be available depending on your insurance provider and plan.
